Adam Chen, Ph. D.

Adam Chen has been practicing TCM for over forty years. He conducts clinical research on acupuncture and diseases including insomnia, headache and women’s health issues. His collaborators include medical doctors and scientists from Toronto Western General Hospital, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Mount Sinai Hospital, Women’s College Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital. The federal government has called upon him to consult on issues regarding alternative medicine. 

He is the founder and head of the acupuncture clinic at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also the president of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Physician Association of Canada. He has been often featured, both nationally and locally, on television and radio stations, magazines, and newspapers. Some of these appearances can be found in the Mediasection.

Adam Chen is a graduate from Heilongjiang TCM University in China. After coming to Canada in 1983, he earned M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees (in Genetics) from the University of Alberta. He has spoken at national and international professional conferences, as well as publishing numerous research papers in various peer reviewed journals.

Timeline of accomplishments

1969 - 1970 Adam Chen was selected for training as a battlefield rescue patrol at a local hospital. He learned basic nursing, medical treatment and first-aid, which started his journey as a professional doctor.
1971 - 1975 Studied and practiced with fellow doctors at the local hospital.
1975 - 1980 Was recommended for the Heilongjiang Chinese Medical University; after graduation he continued to study Chinese medicine in more advanced classes.
1980 - 1981 Entered the Harbin Medical College for medical genetics with first honors from the previous university.
1981 - 1983 Was hired as professor at Heilongjiang Chinese Medicine University.
1982 - 1983 Achieved first place in provincial examinations and entered Heilongjiang University for further education in English.
1983 Obtained the Canadian Scholarship to enter the University of Alberta.
1983-1990 Received a Master's degree and Doctorate in molecular biology and genetics at the University of Alberta.
1990 - 1993 Post-doctoral studies at the Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.
1994 - 1997 Researcher at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital.
1995 - 2008 Started an independent Chinese medical clinic in Markham.
1997 - 2002 At The Michener Institute, Adam Chen established a Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Department. As the head of the department he also established an acupuncture therapy clinic in school, which gave Canada its first major in Chinese medicine.
2000 - 2002 Adam Chen founded an acupuncture research dispensary at the Mount Sinai Hospital. This created an enormous stir at the time; the inclusion of Chinese medicine in a hospital brought acupuncture into the Canadian mainstream.
2002 - Present Adam Chen founded a clinic at St. John’s Hospital, providing out-patience services. He currently serves as director of the clinic.
2008 - Present Adam Chen was invited to be the Director of Acupuncture at the Mount Sinai Hospital.
2008 - Present Adam Chen was invited to be the Director of the AC99 Health Centres.
